Diplomat of the heart. Why you should give a poinsettia to a loved one on 12/12?

Bonn, 09.12.2019. Don’t forget: December 12th is Poinsettia Day. This tradition has been honoured in the USA for over 150 years. Whether as a gesture of love or friendship, an apology, a get-well wish, thank you or “just because” – there are so many reasons for surprising loved ones with a starry greeting on this day.

Why on 12/12?

It’s not the mnemonic number combination that determined the date for Poinsettia Day. The date has a lot more to do with the man who first recognized the decorative potential of the poinsettia: Joel Roberts Poinsett. He was the first US diplomat to serve in Mexico and brought the poinsettia back with him to the United States around 200 years ago. He died on 12 December 1851 and one year later Congress voted that the anniversary of his death would henceforth be known as Poinsettia Day.

What to give?

On Poinsettia Day everything is about poinsettias. With its star-shaped brightly-coloured bracts, this plant makes a beautiful gift, whether in unadorned purity or as a decorated potted plant. In bouquets and floral arrangements, cut poinsettias also bring joy to all those receiving them. But more important than lots of adornment is the personal greeting that comes with the present.

Who to give it to?

Poinsettias will bring joy to any loved one. Whether as a gesture of love or friendship, an apology, a get-well wish, thank you or “just because” – there are so many reasons and occasions for surprising loved ones with a starry greeting on 12/12. With a few accessories and pretty packaging in keeping with the occasion, your message is sure to come across.
